Disney’s (DIS) "Raya and the Last Dragon" easily won the weekend box office, the biggest since pandemic shut down theaters as New York City was finally allowed to reopen at 25% capacity. The movie sports an A CinemaScore and took in an estimated $8.6M in its North American debut. Overseas, "Raya and the Last Dragon" earned $17.6M from 32 markets for a global total of $26.2M.
BOX OFFICE RUNNERS-UP: AT&T (T) subsidiary Warner Bros.' "Tom & Jerry" placed number 2 with $6.6M for a domestic total of $23M and $57.3M globally. Behind it was Lionsgate’s (LGF.A) "Chaos Walking," which debuted to $3.4M. Focus Features' specialty pic "Boogie" placed number 4, earning an estimated $1.2M in its debut. Rounding out the top five, Comcast (CMCSA) subsidiary Universal and DreamWorks Animation's "The Croods: A New Age" grossed another $780,000 for a domestic total of $53.6M.
